Many of our newspaper readers find macroeconomic changes abstract and difficult to relate to their personal finances. At the same time, interest rate decisions, tax reforms, and housing market trends significantly impact everyday life. By leveraging AI-driven calculators, we empower readers to assess how different economic scenarios affect their financial situation—enhancing comprehension, insight, and engagement. One of our solutions is: AI-Driven Calculators. With the help of AI, Robin Rasper has developed four interactive tools:

1. Mortgage Interest Rate Checker – Users input their current mortgage interest rate and simulate how changes, such as a 0.25 percentage point decrease, impact their monthly expenses. This tool is utilized before and after each central bank interest rate announcement.

2. Housing Affordability Checker – By entering their monthly income, readers can see which neighborhoods in Gothenburg they can afford to purchase a one-, two-, three-, or four-bedroom apartment.
3. Tax Calculator – Users enter their gross monthly income and receive an exact calculation of their tax reduction for 2025 based on new tax policies.

4. Amortization Calculator – This tool provides insights into how new amortization regulations affect loan repayment obligations based on income, property value, and existing mortgage levels.
Results for this campaign
Robin’s Robots demonstrates how AI can make financial journalism more comprehensible and relevant to a broad audience. By linking macroeconomic changes to individual financial realities, we have successfully created tools that enhance understanding and engagement. These are our key results:
- Increased engagement in financial and political journalism through interactive tools.
- Significant rise in subscription conversions, particularly around interest rate announcements.
- Positive reader feedback highlighting the value of personalized financial insights.
- A clear demonstration of AI’s ability to democratize financial information and make it more accessible to a wider audience.
- Significant time savings in journalistic work, as these calculators can be reused for each interest rate announcement. Previously, journalists had to write a new article and consult experts to manually calculate the impact of rate changes on readers' mortgages.
What makes Robin's Robots unique is that it is not just an editorial innovation—it exemplifies how an individual journalist’s initiative and creativity can leverage AI to add reader value. Robin Rasper single-handedly developed these calculators, showcasing the potential for AI in journalism when used by dedicated reporters with technical expertise.
In the near future, we aim to develop and scale up this initiative so that it can be applied to a wider range of economic issues as well as other complex topics, such as societal matters and politics. We also want more journalists to master this technology and use AI to create their own calculators – along with other tools that enhance interactivity and improve reader understanding.
